The Importance of bringing Culture into the ESL classroom


Culture shock refers to the anxiety and feelings (of surprise, disorientation, uncertainty, confusion, etc.) felt when people have to operate within a different and unknown cultural or social environment, such as a foreign country. It grows out of the difficulties in assimilating the new culture, causing difficulty in knowing what is appropriate and what is not. This is often combined a dislike for or even disgust (moral or aesthetical) with certain aspects of the new or different culture. The term was introduced for the first time in 1954 by Kalervo Oberg.

Second Language Acquisition SLA

Second Language Acquisition is the process by which people learn a second language in addition to their native language(s). The term second language is used to describe the acquisition of any language after the acquisition of the mother tongue. The language to be learned is often referred to as the "target language" or "L2", compared to the first language, "L1", referred to as the "source language". CLIL: Content and Language Integrated Learning


CLIL describes an evolving approach to teaching and learning where subjects are taught and studied through the medium of a non-native language. The experience of learning subjects through the medium of a non-native language is more challenging and intensive as there is more exposure to the language and learners acquire knowledge and skills in different areas of the curriculum. In CLIL, learning a curricular subject in a second, third or sometimes fourth language involves drawing on effective pedagogical practice from a range of different educational contexts. Curricular subjects apart from languages are taught through the target language. These include: Art, Citizenship, Classics, Design Technology, Economics, Environmental Studies, Geography, History, Information Computer Technology (ICT), Literacy, Maths, Music, Physical Education (PE), Philosophy, Politics, Religious, Education (RE), Science, and Social Science.

The Bilingual Colombia Programme BCP


The national “Bilingual Colombia Programme” has established proficiency levels to be attained in the long-term –2010 and 2019, respectively. Actions have started in connection to the definition of national standards, teacher preparation and examinations. This presentation attempts to pinpoint the challenges policy-makers,teachers and teacher educators are facing in Colombia, a Spanish-speaking country in the north-western part of South America, as well as some critical points we have identified for achieving the above-mentioned goals. My reflections are complemented with some University professors’ testimonies, as expressed in a survey given to them on the topic of this paper. Introduction to ALTE


ALTE – The Association of Language Testers in Europe – is an association of institutions within Europe, each of which produces examinations and certification for language learners. Each member provides examinations of the language which is spoken as a mother tongue in their own country or region.

The concept of ALTE was initially formed by the Universities of Cambridge and Salamanca late in 1989, and at the first meeting of the association in 1990 there were eight founder members. Since then membership has grown so that there are now 31 members, representing 26 European languages.

With the breaking down of international barriers between European states and increasing opportunities for the members of the workforce to move from one country to another, the need for transferability of qualifications is clear.

What is TKT?

The Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) is a test from Cambridge ESOL about teaching English to speakers of other languages. It aims to increase teachers' confidence and enhance job prospects by focusing on the core teaching knowledge needed by teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners, anywhere in the world. In this video I make a general presentation of what TKT is.

The Importance of the CEF: The Common European Framework

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment, abbreviated as CEF or CEFR, "is a common basis for the elaboration of language syllabuses, curriculum guidelines, examinations, texbooks, etc. across Europe". in other words, it describes what language learners have to learn in order to use language for communication and what knowledge and skills they have to develop so as to act effectively.
